Moroccan Clay Masks: Which One Suits Your Skin?

Clay is one of the oldest beauty ingredients in the world, and in Morocco it's a fixture of the hammam and of every bride's pre-wedding routine. But the clay mask that works wonders on your friend's oily skin can leave dry skin tight and uncomfortable. The secret is matching the type, the blend and the timing to your skin.

How clay masks work

Moroccan clay is rich in minerals and naturally absorbs excess oil and impurities from the skin's surface, then rinses away with them — leaving skin looking cleaner, pores less visible and texture smoother. That same absorbency is why clay can over-dry if it's left on too long or used too often.

Types of Moroccan clay mask

Moroccan ghassoul (rhassoul) clay

Ghassoul, also spelled rhassoul, is the traditional Moroccan clay from the Atlas Mountains, prized for cleansing without foam. It comes as a powder that you mix with water or rose water. Our Moroccan ghassoul clay is the most flexible option, because you choose what to add. Best for oily, combination and normal skin.

Clay with argan and coffee

Purifying clay, nourishing argan oil and gently exfoliating coffee grounds in one: the Argan Clay Mask with Coffee. Best for normal, combination and dull-looking skin; go gently, or skip it, if you're sensitive.

Match the mask to your skin

Skin type Blend Time How often
Oily Clay + rose water 10-15 min Twice a week
Combination Clay + rose water on the T-zone 10 min Once or twice a week
Dry Clay + rose water + 3 drops argan + 1 tsp yoghurt 5-8 min Every 10 days
Sensitive Clay + rose water + yoghurt, small amount 5 min Every two weeks, after a patch test
Dull Clay + rose water + a pinch of Aker Fassi 10 min Weekly
  • Oily: mix with pure rose water for a gentler, fresher mask — and don't overdo it, as over-drying can backfire.
  • Dry: add a few drops of pure Moroccan argan oil and rinse while the mask is still damp.
  • Combination: multi-mask — clay on the T-zone, something hydrating on the cheeks.
  • Sensitive: patch-test first, use a thin layer briefly, and avoid gritty masks.
  • Dull: add a pinch of Aker Fassi powder for a rosy glow. Explore the Aker Fassi and brightening collections.

How to apply, step by step

  1. Cleanse and pat dry — ideally after a warm shower.
  2. Mix a tablespoon of clay with liquid in a glass, wooden or ceramic bowl until yoghurt-smooth.
  3. Apply an even layer with a brush or clean fingers, avoiding eyes and lips.
  4. Wait — rinse when the edges start to dry, before it cracks. Feeling very tight? Mist with rose water.
  5. Rinse by wetting the mask first, then massaging gently under lukewarm water.
  6. Moisturise straight away.

For the body: in the hammam, clay goes all over after the kessa — or just on the back and chest if those areas get oily. Leave for 10 minutes, rinse and moisturise. See our Moroccan bath collection.

Common mistakes

  1. Letting the mask crack
  2. Using metal bowls or spoons — wood, glass or ceramic is the tradition
  3. Masking daily
  4. Skipping moisturiser
  5. Scrubbing off a dry mask
  6. Mixing a big batch to store — mix only what you need

FAQ

How often should I use a clay mask?

Can I use clay on breakouts?

Gently on blemish-prone skin, but avoid open, inflamed spots — and see a dermatologist if breakouts persist.

Is it okay during pregnancy?

It's a rinse-off product, but always check with your doctor before trying anything new while pregnant.

How do I store ghassoul powder?

In an airtight container somewhere dry, away from bathroom humidity.
